The junior standouts of Henley Royal Regatta 2021, what’s next for 2022?

The countdown to Henley Royal Regatta 2022 has officially begun. Alex McMullen from Junior Rowing News sits down with directors and coaches at Headington School, Hinksey Sculling School, and Shiplake College to reflect on the standout performances of their squads at last year’s Royal as they gear up for another shot at glory later this month

There is certainly no shortage of highly successful junior programmes on the circuit nowadays. However, during a truly extraordinary year for schoolchildren nationwide, the lockdown-induced disruptions to the usual flow of training programmes faced by clubs and schools alike left many question marks looming over their entire 2020-2021 season. From circuit sessions on Zoom, to individual erging at home and months without water time, many squads had to go back to the drawing board and redesign their programmes from scratch.

In spite of this, the number of junior programmes which still managed to send highly competitive crews to Henley Royal in August was nothing short of remarkable. Among these were the qualifying crews across a range of boat classes from Headington School, Hinksey Sculling School and Shiplake College, whose drive and determination epitomised the spirit of junior rowing throughout their entire 2021 campaigns.
